The Pakistani medical community is grieving the tragic loss of Dr. Maryam Shoukat, a 27-year-old doctor pursuing her residency in the United States. She passed away just 30 minutes before she was scheduled to undergo a life-saving liver transplant at Rutgers University Hospital.
Dr. Maryam’s journey had touched countless hearts. When news of her critical condition spread, doctors, students, and community members from both Pakistan and the US united in an extraordinary show of support.
Through urgent fundraising efforts, nearly $400,000 was collected to cover her treatment and hospital expenses—a powerful reflection of the compassion, solidarity, and strength of the global Pakistani medical community.
Against the odds, a matching donor was found, and the hospital approved the transplant. For a moment, there was renewed hope that her life might be saved. But tragically, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and despite all efforts, she could not survive.
Organizations such as APPNA (Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America), along with colleagues and friends, remembered Dr. Maryam as a young woman of courage, resilience, and dedication. She was celebrated not only for her devotion to medicine but also as a symbol of hope for all who believed in her recovery.
Her untimely passing is being mourned deeply in Pakistan and abroad. Though her life ended far too soon, the compassion and unity shown during her struggle will remain a lasting reminder of the power of community and humanity in times of need.
