Pak-Afghan Tensions Leave Hundreds of Containers Stranded, Resulting in Daily Losses of Rs. 1 Billion

The ongoing border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have severely disrupted trade, leaving hundreds of containers stranded at Karachi and Bin Qasim ports.

These disruptions are causing estimated daily losses of nearly Rs. 1 billion and creating major challenges for traders and businesses on both sides of the border.

According to Pak-Afghan Chamber President Junaid Makda, more than 1,000 containers are currently stuck at key crossing points, including Torkham, Chaman, and Ghulam Khan. The delays have led to massive backlogs, with goods unable to move forward as ongoing tensions and poor coordination between the two countries continue to worsen the situation.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has also halted the Afghan Transit Trade, further intensifying the crisis. As a result, perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables are being sold at half price to prevent spoilage, while warehouses are overcrowded, adding extra storage and transportation costs for traders.

The stranded goods include essential items like electronics, medicines, textiles, and food supplies—critical for both nations. The disruption has weakened supply chains, slowed trade activity, and increased financial strain on importers and exporters.

Experts warn that if the situation persists, it could have long-term consequences for regional trade and economic stability. Business leaders are urging both governments to take immediate action, restore cross-border operations, and ensure the smooth movement of goods to prevent further economic losses.
