Punjab Launches AI System to Combat Smog and Enhance Air Quality

Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has announced the rollout of an advanced AI-based monitoring and forecasting system designed to tackle smog and improve air quality across the province. The initiative aims to enable early action against pollution and safeguard public health through data-driven solutions.

According to the minister, this AI-powered technology can predict pollution levels up to four months in advance, allowing authorities to plan and enforce preventive measures such as stricter industrial regulations, improved traffic management, and public awareness drives.

Developed in collaboration with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), the system combines drone surveillance and real-time monitoring to ensure effective environmental oversight.

Through drone-based tracking, the government can swiftly identify and address pollution sources, while integration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) control room ensures immediate action against violators.

Aurangzeb described the initiative as a major milestone toward a cleaner, healthier Punjab, emphasizing that technology-driven governance will not only help reduce smog but also enhance air quality year-round.

She added that the system will generate valuable insights for environmental policy-making and urban planning, setting a benchmark for other provinces to follow.

This project reflects the Punjab government’s strong commitment to climate action, public health, and sustainable development for future generations.
