BCCI Secretary Says No Assurance of Handshake in India-Pakistan Women’s Match

The upcoming Women’s World Cup clash between India and Pakistan in Colombo has already drawn attention, not only for the on-field action but also for what might unfold beyond the boundary.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has stated that although the match will be conducted strictly under the official laws of cricket, there is “no guarantee” that players from both sides will exchange handshakes.

He clarified that all mandatory protocols outlined in the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) laws will be observed, including respecting umpire decisions and upholding the spirit of the game. However, gestures such as handshakes or hugs are not required under cricket laws and remain entirely optional, depending on the teams and circumstances.

Given the tense political relationship between India and Pakistan, encounters between the two women’s sides are limited to international tournaments or neutral venues. This backdrop often heightens emotions, putting even small gestures—like a handshake—under intense scrutiny.

Fans from both nations are eagerly anticipating the high-stakes contest, known for its intensity and competitiveness. While the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on the cricket itself, the prospect of post-match sportsmanship gestures could also capture public attention.

For now, one thing is certain: the players will adhere to the rules of the game, while everything else will depend on the spirit of the moment.
